Catholic Schools

We are fortunate to have high quality Catholic schools, from nursery to sixth-form level, in our area.

Sacred Heart Primary School and Nursery

Sacred Heart Primary School and Nursery is adjacent to Sacred Heart Church, with its entrance on Windermere Road. In 2008, the school's OFSTED inspectors described Sacred Heart as a "good and improving school with some outstanding features". Links between the school and the parish are strong, and the school's religious education standards and Catholic ethos are outstanding. Sacred Heart School is the designated primary school for children living in the central and southern parts of the parish (within the boundaries of the former parish of Sacred Heart).

Other Primary Schools

St Teresa's Primary School in Rochford is the designated primary school for children living in the northern part of the parish (within the boundaries of the former parish of St John Fisher). St Helen's Primary School in Westcliff-on-Sea, Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School in Leigh-on-Sea and St George's Primary School in Shoeburyness are also nearby.

Secondary Schools

St Bernard's High School and Arts College (for girls) and St Thomas More High School (for boys) are the Catholic secondary schools in our area.

School Applications

The Catholic schools in Southend are non-feepaying and are supported by local authority funding. Applications for places at these schools are made through Southend-on-Sea Borough Council (or Essex County Council for St Teresa's Primary School in Rochford). Priority for places at these schools is given to baptised children of Catholic families, but the exact requirements vary from school to school. Enquiries about the application procedures should therefore be addressed to the individual school concerned.

Priest's Reference in Support of School Applications

Applications for a place at a Catholic school normally require proof of the child's baptism and evidence that the family attend church frequently. Duplicate Certificates of Baptism can always be obtained from the parish in which the child was baptised. Proof of Catholic practice requires a reference from a priest, which can be obtained on request. For further information see the links below:
